Travel: Europe

It’s happening. It’s finally happening.

Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve had an adoration to special dates and numbers. I have a vivid memory of sitting on my bed in my cotton candy pink coloured room, listening to 90’s pop, curating a list of things I wanted to accomplish before I turned 26. A few of those things included; Graduate university, Live in another country, Get married and to go back to my place of birth at age 26. I’ve done an acceptable job of completing these things but it’s time for my ultimate goal. Every year we travel somewhere new for our anniversary. Our honeymoon in Turks and Caicos, first year in Cabo, second year in the Dominican and in a few weeks Mark and I will be spending 3 weeks in France, Italy and… yes. Yes. Switzerland.

One of my favourite things about me is that I was born in Zurich, Switzerland. I’m fairly aware that where you were born has absolutely nothing to do with who you truly are, but to me, it does. I say, “I’m Swiss! Of course I love chocolate and cheese!” Don’t even get me started on how I react when I see a Swiss flag or see MADE IN SWITZERLAND. I’m not Swiss. My dear husband likes to remind me that I am indeed, not Swiss (he’s jealous). In Grade 3 I told a boy in my class I was born in Zurich and he didn’t believe me. It was $10 for him unless I brought in my birth certificate. A few days later once my dad photocopied the paper, I brought it to school and the next day he sorely gave me the amount completely in pennies contained in a glass jar. It was awesome.

I lived in Zurich with my parents for the first two years of my life, before we left for another country. It has been a huge dream of mine to stand in front of the hospital, to visit the house I first lived in and to roam the places my Mother would take me when I was just a baby. My dad has always teased me that I have indeed traveled all over Europe. “What, you don’t remember being at the top of the Eiffel Tower?” It’s time for me to re-live them all!

I already know I’m going to be an emotional mess – ugly cry. everywhere – but I’ve accepted that. (Let’s hope my husband does too). I’m watching travel videos, looking at photos and reading reviews of all there is to do and I’m already crying. Neither of us have been to Europe, so this trip is big deal for the both of us. Side story: Mark gets to see “his” soccer team play live, and I’m so excited for him. We aim to balance our must-see/eat/do with time to simply sit, walk and soak in the cultures of these cities. I already know that I am going to fall madly in love with Paris and Italy. And know it is going to be some kind of wonderful being 26 years old in Zurich.

We’ll be in Paris, France – Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Italy and Zurich, Switzerland.
I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Just be brave.

“August Long” on the Sunshine Coast

It’s finally starting to feel like Summer here in Vancouver. The first three weeks were spent in pants and sweaters. A very, very unusual occurrence for us West Coasters. As of right now the sun is shining down bright and 25°C downtown. Oh how I have missed and love you, SUMMER.

This past weekend, us British Columbians enjoyed a stat holiday on Monday. It was BC Day – or better known as “August Long.” We work every Saturday so we set off to the Sunshine Coast Sunday morning and thoroughly relaxed and enjoyed a small getaway. I could say this about every vacation but really, we had the best weekend.

Third Honeymoon: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

How wonderful it is to be settled back into our home sweet home in Beautiful British Columbia. Although I wouldn’t mind being back in the Caribbean… in humid 40° C… with a tropical drink in hand… with unlimited access to prepared food (lobster. lots of it.)… and zero responsibilities. I’m happy to be back, I promise!

We’ve turned celebrating anniversaries into opportunities to escape to tropical places. Backtrack 2 years ago: our honeymoon was in Turks and Caicos, our first year anniversary in Cabo, Mexico and this year we celebrated in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We both feel so grateful to had all of these experiences, each year. I’ll say this much, Turks and Caicos is pretty hard to top. We hope to one day celebrate an anniversary in the Maldives. One day! We have about every tropical hot spot destination on our “travel bucket list,” and we really hope that we can cross them all off within our lifetime! So far, we’re doing alright!

Our 2016 USA Road Trip Highlights

After 11 days of constant moving, it feels so, so wonderful to be home sweet home. Here are 11 highlights from our 11 day trip. (You can find our 29 hour journey to Kansas, here.)

1. My niece is still the cutest little person in the world. She was the main purpose of our trip. We just wanted to spend time with our favourite niece! (To be fair, she’s the only niece/ nephew in the family… thus far…)The last time we saw our niece was this past Christmas. She’s grown and learned so much in the months that have passed! She turns the big two in June and we hope that we get to see her in another short while! Did I mention that she speaks Spanish? (more…)
